We are over the moon to announce that The Guild (Dumfries) C.I.C have been given the opportunity to organise a Christmas Makers Market at the Christmas Lights Switch On in Dumfries on Sunday 2nd December 2018 from 12 noon until 7pm. We are working in partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Council, Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust and many other partners to bring a spectacular Christmas experience to the streets of Dumfries to celebrate the Year of Young People and the forthcoming launch of Moat Brae in Spring 2019.

The Christmas Makers Market is the perfect opportunity to meet the maker, feast on food from across the region & beyond, take delight in a marvellous selection of beautifully crafted designs and fill those shopping bags whilst indulging in some good old conversations with our team, volunteers and marvellous traders.

So, whether you are shopping or not, the Christmas Lights Switch On provides an excellent opportunity to support the town centre by heading into town, enjoying the makers market and also free entertainment & performances, creative workshops, story telling and getting into the festive spirit. We hope people will take to the streets of Dumfries and enjoy this festive experience.

So head into town for 12 noon when the market will open and our first workshop begins. We've then our first story telling session at 1pm with Renia Boyle. Entertainment on the stage at the Plainstanes kicks off at 2pm. The Lights will be switched on at 6pm which will then be followed by a short firework display. The Christmas Market and Youth activities will continue to 7pm when the event will end.

Dumfries town centre will become a bustling market town, filled with a whole host of local stallholders at our special Christmas Makers Market. Over 20 local makers, designers, artisan food & drinks producers, charities and street food vendors will host stalls in the town centre taking over part of Queensberry Square and down towards Burns Statue. It’s sure to a wonderful event and the perfect excuse to get some Christmas shopping done.

Visitors can enjoy shopping for something a little bit different, unique and handmade. They will get the chance to meet locally based designer/makers in person and discuss designs and inspiration behind their work. Why not enjoy delicious artisan foods produced locally. Our Christmas market place will feature everything from home and gift, arts and crafts, children’s stocking fillers, Christmas decorations, food and drink, and we hope perfect ideas to solve any Christmas shopping dilemmas. There will also be a variety of street foods, with space to sit and savour their great culinary delights, engage in conversation and experience a friendly, energetic and festive atmosphere.

We will also be offering storytelling workshops with Renita Boyle and creative workshops with Drawing for Enjoyment, so its much more than just a market.

We are excited to be working in partnership with For Enjoyment CIC at our Makers Market. We have admired what they've been doing in the region for the last two years so its a complete pleasure to have them along on the day to host a couple of workshops for us. For Enjoyment are a group offering photography, drawing and art workshops for all abilities in a warm and friendly environment. The focus is on the enjoyment of drawing and the journey together, not the results.

Head to Queensberry Square at 12 Noon to take part in the first of three workshops that will be hosted throughot the day. The workshops at the Christmas Lights Switch On will be primarily aimed at young people and will be themed around Christmas, Peter Pan, Moat Brae and the Market itself. For Enjoyment workshops are totally accessible and inclusive so will be open to all. The sessions will be drawing based and all materials will be provided.

Renita Boyle performs for thousands of people every year- in groups both large and small. Her repertoire includes stories that are rowdy and reflective, traditional and tall. She is a ‘tale-telling, tongue-twisting troubadour' and effortlessly entwines skills in poetry, life-writing and community arts.

Renita enjoys all ages and audiences and is adept at working with those who have learning difficulties and/or other special needs. She has featured at bonfires, book days and birthdays; clubs, camps and country parks; churches and schools, conferences and festivals; parents and tots groups; libraries, guilds and gardens; retreat days and relays – not to mention a lift (to a truly captive audience!)

We are delighted that Renita will be joining us on market day to captivate the lovely people of Dumfries at the Christmas Lights Switch. Renita will be hosting four marvellous story telling sessions for us throughout the day in The Stove Network Cafe. She'll also be out and about around our makers market telling stories and singing songs with folks at the Market.
