Our vision for Dumfries Makers Market is a monthly curated street market that includes designers, makers, artists, craftsmen, independent businesses plus artisan food and beverage producers, with an emphasis on quality, regional and seasonal produce. It will have the feel of a festival in a day and include music, street theatre, street art, hands on workshops and talks.
Dumfries Makers Market will be a destination event, a unique and interesting experience to promote a sense of community pride and social interaction. We plan to create an attractive destination, brimming with character and vitality. A place that provides both the stall holders and visitors a truly unique experience and engage the public beyond simply just passively buying something at the market.
We will create a welcoming and inviting destination for the community to meet and greet the makers, food producers, independent businesses and their neighbours. We are passionate about hospitality and want to create an environment where people “feel at home” whilst delving into the different experiences and delights. Families, friends and their children can gather, creating a lovely social community vibe within the streets of Dumfries on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
We feel that we can work together with existing retailers, hospitality businesses, accommodation providers and traders to the mutual benefit of all. We would love to support and coordinate fringe events on market days to promote other local businesses within the town. We envisage that a market of this type would bring locals back to the town centre, many visitors to the area and in turn, much needed revenue to the local economy. It would also be a welcome addition to the regeneration plans for Dumfries Town Centre and a massive contribution to the community of Dumfries.
When we applied for a market licence in April we had no idea the hoops and hurdles we would encounter, you can read Our Story So Far if you're not familiar with our journey. Who knew it could be so complicated and take so long! We've had to instruct a solicitor on our behalf, which was recommended by the council so we had independent advice, and been learning the ins and outs of the legalities. We set a precedent when we made our application as no one had ever applied for a market licenece on the same day and for the same location in the last 15 years. We are delighted that in November 2018 we have influenced change within our council and we've also discovered Good Things Take Time! We might not be able to host a street market festival once a month just yet, but we have been working hard building partnerships and looking at other ideas, developing projects and possibilities.
We were delighted to work in partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Council and organise our very first Makers Market at the Christmas Light Switch On in the town centre of Dumfries. We are also working with Big Burns Supper to bring a two day Makers Market to the festival next year.
